Dewi's Wooden Boombox
Jon Pritchard · Tuesday, Jul 26, 2011 · 1 minute read

This speaker was made more or less from scrap wood for a friends Birthday.

After I dragged a speaker up a hill for a bonfire we were having – powering it with a a fist full of AA batteries – he simply said “I want one”.

A few weeks later this was made.

Since the first field test – which involved him taking it to a music festival, the lid/table was added and the final couple of coats of outdoor varnish were applied.

The table worked well in the second field test, protecting the speakers when in transit on a train journey and, during a beach party, it proved very useful in providing a flat surface for beverages. – During this test it was also found that the horn mouth could hold a total of 16 440ml beer cans – although carrying it was not the easiest feat.

About Me

Since 2008 I’ve been working on various handmade speaker designs, from monstrous surround sound setups, to mixing monitors, to battery powered portables and as many in between as I could think of.

With a Masters Degree in Product Design Engineering from the Glasgow School of Art and The University of Glasgow, I had a good foundation in design and engineering. Along the way I built up my woodworking skills, moving back home to Dorset and learning traditional woodworking skills at The Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis.

My aim is to bring the pasts high quality hand joinery to present day items. The art is not lost quite yet and I believe there is still a place for hand made objects made to be used and made to last. Now more than ever with sustainability becoming more important.
